Join us for a special celebration on Wednesday, June 8 at Hertz Hall for the 300th anniversary of the compilation of the first book of Johann Sebastian Bach’s beloved Well-Tempered Clavier.
In two free sessions (one late morning and one early afternoon), various local, national, and international performers will tackle the 24 preludes and fugues, one written in each major and minor key. The pieces will be performed on a variety of historical keyboard instruments from the collection of the University of California, Berkeley, including clavichords, harpsichords, organs, and fortepianos. Both sessions will be moderated by internationally-renowned keyboardists Matthew Dirst and David Yearsley.
Composed “for the profit and use of musical youth desirous of learning, and especially for the pastime of those already skilled in this study,” the Well-Tempered Clavier has become one of the cornerstones of the keyboard literature. This is a special event not to miss!
